Cancer Genetic Counseling and Testing

Anyone with concerns about how their family history of cancer affects their cancer risks should consider seeing a genetic counselor. Similarly, anyone who has had cancer themselves and is concerned about how their cancer affects their relatives (i.e. children, siblings, etc…) should also consider seeing a genetic counselor. A genetic counselor has a masters’ degree and is, most often, a board-certified healthcare professional. A genetic counselor that specializes in cancer is trained to collect a careful family history and analyze that family history for patterns that may indicate a hereditary cancer syndrome. If genetic testing is available and indicated, the genetic counselor will discuss this type of testing with a patient so that they can make an informed decision about the testing. With or without genetic testing, the genetic counselor will make standard recommendations for cancer screening based on the history reported by the patient.

Genetic counseling is an integral part of the Risk Assessment and Prevention Program at Invision Sally Jobe. Although concerns about hereditary breast cancer are the most common indication for referral, all types of cancer are addressed by our genetic counselor. Anyone with concerns about their personal and family history of any type of cancer should consider scheduling a genetic counseling visit, especially those with any of the following in the family:

**Suspicious cancer clusters include: breast/ovarian, colorectal/endometrial/ ovarian, melanoma/pancreatic.

Cancer genetic testing is a very scientific process but often patients have many questions about it. Additionally, genetic test results can be complex to interpret and a genetic counselor can help patients understand what the results mean for them and their relatives. A patient who is interested in scheduling a visit with the genetic counselor at Invision Sally Jobe should contact centralized scheduling at (720) 493-3226.
