01/15/2016 - New Guidelines Worry Breast Cancer Experts and Survivors
Newly finalized recommendations that women begin mammograms at age 50 instead of 40 worry breast cancer experts like Dr. Lora Barke, medical director of the Invision Sally Jobe Breast Centers. She recently told Kathy Walsh of CBS 4 News that she fears the guidelines could result in millions of women -- including more than 350,000 in Colorado -- losing insurance coverage of their annual mammograms.
Breast cancer survivors who were diagnosed in their 40s are also alarmed by the new recommendations. "I probably wouldn't be here, to tell you the truth," said Karen Cary, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 44. Hear her story and learn more about the new guidelines, and how they could impact you or someone you love.

01/11/2016 - Breast Health Experts Advise Annual Mammograms Starting at 40
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recently released newly finalized breast cancer screening recommendations. Even though the USPSTF acknowledges that screening mammograms reduce breast cancer deaths in women in their 40s, it recommends women start screening at age 50 and receive the potentially life-saving procedure every other year instead of annually.
Dr. Lora Barke, medical director of the Invision Sally Jobe Breast Network, joins the Society of Breast Imaging and other breast-health experts in recommending annual mammograms starting at age 40. One in 6 women diagnosed with breast cancer is under age 50, and 75 percent of breast cancer patients have no family history of the disease. To learn more, click on the link below.

10/20/2015 - New Breast Cancer Guidelines Support Screening Starting at Age 40
The American Cancer Society (ACS) released new breast cancer screening guidelines that support women who choose to start annual screening mammography beginning at age 40. Under the ACS guidelines, women aged 45 to 54 should receive annual mammograms; women 55 and over should be screened at least every other year, with the option of annual screening. Women 40 to 44 have the option to start annual mammography.
Decades of scientific data show that annual screening mammography starting at 40 results in the greatest mortality reduction, the most lives saved, and most life years gained. Dr. Lora Barke, medical director of the Invision Sally Jobe Breast Centers, cautions that these guidelines apply to women at average risk of developing breast cancer. She advises women to consult risk-assessment specialists, such as certified genetic counselors, to determine the screening plan that is right for them.

05/12/2015 - Support breast cancer screening and women's health!
Seventeen million women could lose insurance coverage for mammograms and an estimated 6,500 additional women could die of breast cancer each year if controversial new breast cancer screening recommendations are adopted.
Though one in six breast cancers occur in women in their forties, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) -- an advisory group that does not include any breast specialists -- is recommending mammograms starting at age 50 and continuing every other year until age 74.
These guidelines diverge from those of the American Cancer Society and numerous respected cancer specialists who unanimously advise women to begin yearly screening mammograms at age 40 -- and even earlier if they have risk factors such as a family history of breast cancer.
The USPSTF is accepting public comment on the draft recommendations through May 18. Click on the link below to submit your comment and support women's health!
04/20/2015 - Controversial Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations Not in Women's Best Interests
Local breast cancer experts, as well as the American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology, agree women should begin annual screening mammograms at age 40 -- contrary to a newly released draft of breast cancer screening guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Breast cancer physicians strongly feel these guidelines, if adopted nationally, would result in missed diagnoses in younger women and more advanced cancers at all ages.
Learn more about the USPSTF recommendations by clicking on the link below.
