09/09/2013 - Most Breast Cancer Deaths Occur in Younger, Unscreened Women

The findings of a new study, published on September 9, 2013, indicate that breast cancer screening saves lives, particularly for women in their 40s. The use of annual mammograms for screening women between 40 and 49 has been controversial, particularly in the last few years.

To address this controversy, researchers from Harvard Medical School in Boston conducted an analysis of the value of mammography screening using a technique called "failure analysis." This technique evaluates breast cancer cases backward from death, in order to determine correlations at diagnosis. The study results support the use of annual mammograms for breast cancer screening in women in their 40s.

02/22/2013 - F.D.A. Approves Breast Cancer Drug

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new type of breast cancer medication that targets tumor cells while sparing healthy ones. The drug Kadcyla from Roche combines their established cancer drug, Herceptin, with a powerful chemotherapy drug. It also includes a third chemical that links the medicines together. The chemical keeps the cocktail intact until it binds to a cancer cell. It then releases the toxic chemotherapy drug to kill the cancer.

Cancer researchers say the drug is an important step forward because it delivers more medication while reducing the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy. Learn more about Kadcyla and the main clinical trial that led to its approval in a New York Times article from February 22, 2013.
