Advanced musculoskeletal imaging done at RIA/Invision is interpreted by a fellowship-trained radiologist, a physician with extra postgraduate training in the diagnosis of abnormalities of the bones, joints, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and muscles. These specialists excel at the evaluation of sports injuries, trauma, arthritis, and tumors of bone and soft tissue. They work in conjunction with many other physicians including orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, neurosurgeons, rheumatologists, and tumor surgeons, as well as internal medicine and primary care physicians, to ensure the most accurate and effective diagnostic evaluation of these conditions. While radiographs (X-rays) are the mainstay for diagnosis of uncomplicated fractures and arthritis, CT scans are sometimes used to image more complicated fractures and for assessment of fracture healing. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging technology of choice for evaluating cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Ultrasound can be used for the evaluation of some tendon injuries as well. These radiologists are also highly skilled in a variety of image-guided injection techniques for pain relief and diagnostic evaluation.
