Breast MRI Screening

If a woman's lifetime risk for breast cancer is 20% or greater, an annual breast MRI may be an option for her.

If a woman’s lifetime risk for breast cancer is 20% or greater, the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network state that annual breast MRI screening is an option for her. It is important to note that breast MRI is not a substitute for mammography. All women of screening age should continue with annual mammograms. A patient may choose to have breast MRI at the same time as a mammogram or she may alternate mammogram and MRI every six months. The patient and her referring physician(s) can determine the schedule that is best. According to the ACS, there is no evidence to support one approach over the other. Patients should discuss this option with their referring physician(s). For more information on this topic, patients can contact our Risk Assessment and Prevention Program at 720-493-3700 or via email at RAPP@riaco.com.

If a patient is interested in breast MRI screening at Invision Sally Jobe, it is important that she returns to her referring doctor(s) to review this information with him or her. Prior to the appointment, we will work with the patient’s insurance company to ensure that the breast MRI is pre-authorized.

Breast Cancer Risk Assessment

Access the Gail Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool to assess your breast cancer risk. This user-friendly calculator will provide an estimate of a woman’s breast cancer risk. Please note that in certain circumstances the Gail model may under- or overestimate risk. For example, it may underestimate risk for patients who have a family history of ovarian cancer or for those who have a family history of breast cancer in second-degree relatives (i.e. aunts, grandmother).
